A Siberian Husky — 45–60 lb for males and 35–50 lb for females, working group, No. 30 of 202 breeds in the 2025 AKC registration ranking — costs a typical owner in Texas about $2,937 a year, or $1,835 to $3,077 depending on food, grooming and insurance. That is almost exactly the average for medium breeds ($2,927), between the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje and the Portuguese Water Dog.
Food is the largest line at 32%. At 47.5 lb this dog needs about 1,400 kcal a day — roughly 26 lb of kibble a month — so brand and tier matter more than for a smaller dog: $828 to $1,008 a year across the standard kibbles we priced ($943 at the median), and several times that on fresh food. Insurance is the next line at 28%.
Ranked No. 30 of 202, it is common enough that most vets and groomers see the breed regularly. Males run about 10 lb heavier than females, which is enough to move a male into a higher parasite-prevention band — the panel's weight setting matters here. The AKC rates its energy at the top of the scale, so the calorie factor is 2× resting energy — a working-dog appetite in a medium body.
A short double coat sheds hard twice a year but needs no clipping; most owners manage with a de-shedding brush and a few baths. Salon visits are optional — the $24 shown assumes home grooming only.
First-year total: $3,890. Beyond the running costs that includes spay or neuter ($457 at Texas prices) and the puppy vaccine series with its extra visits. Medium dogs are the sweet spot for gear — $160 covers a crate, bed and walking kit, and none of it needs replacing as the puppy grows.
Over a 11.9-year median lifespan (a study of 584,734 UK dogs) the total is $35,771; the final 4 years run about $2,903 each once senior exams and bloodwork are added.
